by Bill Kohut for DasineTheDream.com Dasine Asberry improved his record to 3-2 with a split decision win over Rami Ibraham in a four-round, lightweight bout. This battle, part of Joey Eye Boxing’s first promotion card, was easily the fight of the night packed with action. Asberry, taking his first fight at 135 lbs., came out strong. He set the pace in the first round by knocking Ibraham down twice. "The first knockdown was from a body shot. That took something out of him," said Asberry. The self-proclaimed Arabian Nightmare got up both times before the bell saved him. Ibraham then decided to change his tactics and become a brawler for the rest of the fight. He pinned Asberry against the ropes for much of the second round. Both combatants continually traded punches for the entire three minutes earning the boxers a standing ovation from the crowd. The third round started where the second left off, with Ibraham cornering Asberry. Ibraham received several warnings of head butts and low blows by referee Frank Cappucino. Finally, Cappucino deducted a point from Ibraham for continuous hits below the belt. When the action resumed, Asberry slipped an Ibraham right and countered with a short, overhand left that sent Ibraham through the ropes. Asberry regained his ring savvy in the fourth and outboxed Ibraham throughout the round. "Dasine had him in trouble twice in the 4th," said trainer Bob McGeehan. "He boxed smartly and won the round." Asberry won the split decision (37-36 twice), despite knocking Ibraham down three times and earning a point for Ibrahams’ foul. "I don't agree with the scoring, but Dasine earned his win and we will continue to move forward," added McGeehan. Cutman Neil Anthony and promising amateur Gabriel Maldonado were invaluable during the fight. "As usual, it was a team effort. From the time that we arrived until the tape was taken off of Dasine's hands, everyone worked towards this victory," said McGeehan. Dasine's next fight will be on 6/24 against an opponent to be determined. At this time, Joey Eye Boxing is trying to secure a six-round rematch with Ibraham as the co-main event. |
