Edgewater Park's Dasine "The Dream" Asberry knocked down Kevin Carmody three times
en route to a majority decision win Friday night in a four-round junior welterweight bout at The Lagoon in
Essington, Pa.
Two of the judges saw the fight 38-36 for Asberry, while one official scored the fight even at 38-38.
"Dasine came into the fight as a big underdog," said Oaklyn trainer Bob McGeehan of R and B Fitness in
Pennsauken, who, along with Palmyra's Neil Anthony, work Asberry's corner. "But he willed himself to victory."
Asberry knocked Carmody down once in the first round and twice in the second round. With the win, the
25-year-old Asberry, who turned professional after fighting in several toughman competitions, improves to
2-1 with one knockout.
"When Dasine came to me he was 0-1. He had the potential, but he just needed some guidance," McGeehan
said. "Now he comes to the gym and gives his all after working 12-hour shifts at his day job. He's a hard
worker who wants to succeed in boxing."
Although Carmody was making his pro debut, the Philadelphian had an extensive amateur career.
In January, Carmody was just two fights away from qualifying for this year's Olympic Boxing Trials before
losing his semifinal bout at the Eastern Trials.
"Working with Bob has given me the confidence in the ring I needed. But I'd also like to thank my sparing
partners for helping me prepare for this fight," said Asberry of middleweight Gabriel Maldonado of
Pennsauken and super middleweight Mike "The Fighting Lawyer" Catalano of Washington Township.
"Plus, I get a nice following and a lot of support at everyone of my fight,". Asberry said. "I hope this win earns me some more fans."
